Monday September 5, 2022 Honeoye Lake Water Quality
Updated: Sep 5, 2022
Surface Water Temperature: ~74.1 F
Water Clarity: ~5.6 Feet
Lake Level: 802.8 Feet above sea level
Lake Level Relative to Weir: -0.7 Feet
Observations: Monday (9/5/22), The water clarity has increased ~1.6 feet to ~5.6 feet and the surface water temperature decreased ~2.5 F to ~74.1 F over the last week. The lake’s temperature and dissolved oxygen remains well mixed. The lake seems to be moving toward its fall pattern already. We were not able to monitor all of our near shore locations today due to the rain. The lake’s open water looked good today with light visible blue-green algae in the water column. No surface scum in open water. However, we did observe dense blue-green algae in the water column near our dock (See pictures below):
Today we found blue-green algae species of Anabaena, Gloeotrichia, Aphanizomenon, Microcystis, and serval other algae species we haven't identified yet (picture to left):
We are now in the peak period over the next few weeks for blue-green algae blooms.
The DEC recommends that you, your family, and pets avoid contact with water that contains blue-green algae like Aphanizomenon, Anabaena, Gloeotrichia, and Microcystis. Everyone should be very careful to watch for blue-green algae blooms for the next few weeks.
Today's (Monday 9/5/22) temperature and dissolved oxygen graph is on the left. The lake is isothermal (i.e., temperature and dissolved oxygen remains well mixed). You can see this by the convergence of the temperature and dissolved oxygen graph lines for the various depths on the left. Since the dissolved oxygen was greater that 5.0 mg/L at the bottom no legacy phosphorus should be being released at this time. If we get 90 F weather the lake will stratify again. Surface water temperature was ~74.1 F and bottom water temperature was ~73.8 F. 1-meter equals 3.3 feet.
Always use your own visual assessment before making contact with the lake water at this time of year as the blue-green algae situation can change daily if not hourly. Please regularly check the DEC HABs alert map for more detailed updates on Honeoye Lake HABs alerts:
